Amazingly at this point in the season Hibs were still top of the league after 13 rounds of matches. Rangers were fourth behind Aberdeen and Motherwell, albeit by only two points, and Celtic were sixth behind Kilmarnock by another two points. Only six points however (in the days of two points for a win) separated Hibs from Raith in eleventh place.
Hibs and Motherwell had emerged in the early part of the season as the closest challengers to Rangers. Eighteen-year-old Kevin Harper scored the winner at Easter Road while Motherwell were trouncing Falkirk 5-3. Elsewhere, the Scotsman noted in the bullets above the headline, Chic Charnley was living up to expectations at Partick.
