Bobby Williamson gave most of Hibs’ up and coming youngsters a run out in this League Cup 2nd round tie against Third Division opposition. It was a policy that Hibs and other teams have regretted in the past when their opponents have read the selection as disrespect for their chances. Tonight however was one of those nights where the youngsters grabbed their chance with absolute confidence and paid Montrose the ultimate respect of thrashing them.
Stephen Dobbie, still two months shy of his 21st birthday, was the fastest man out of the blocks, netting in the first minute and completing a hat-trick within the half hour. His night’s work done he was hooked five minutes into the second half, by which time Hibs were four up, Garry O’Connor having notched the first of a brace in between Dobbie’s opener and his second. Murray, Riordan and Scott Brown added to a Montrose own goal to put Hibs within touching distance of double figures, but the final five minutes were squandered, much to the Gable Endies’ relief no doubt.
